Gruel Cooking Instructions and Serving Suggestions

Dorothy’s Power Gruel is 100% pre-cooked, so you can eat it hot or cold!

Instructions – Cold

Once thawed, it is safe to eat from the container or transfer it to another bowl. Load it up with your favorite ingredients (below)!

Instructions – Hot

DO NOT USE THE SINGLE SERVING PAPER BOWL WHEN HEATING.

microwave cooking
Microwave (from frozen or thawed):
  • Move DPG from the single-serving bowl to a microwave-safe dish.
  • From frozen, microwave 3-4 minutes on HIGH and stir at 2 minutes.
  • From thawed, microwave 1 minute 30 seconds on HIGH.
  • The gruel should be steaming. Microwaves vary; adjust times as needed.
  • Add ingredients (below) for taste or nutrition, mix well.
  • Taste the Gruel carefully, as it may be hot.
stovetop cooking
Stovetop (from thawed only):
  • On a stovetop, warm a saucepan between LOW and MED heat. Add several tablespoons of water. You’ll want to experiment with what heat level works best on your stovetop. Keep an eye on it the first few times you make it!
  • Once the pan is heated, remove the Gruel from a single-serving container and place in the saucepan for between 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently. Heat until the Gruel is steaming. Stovetops vary; adjust time and temperature as needed.
  • After heating, place the gruel in a bowl, add ingredients for taste or nutrition (below), mix well.
  • Taste the gruel carefully, as it may still be hot.

Serving Suggestions

Load it up to meet your health needs and flavor preferences. There are so many awesome ingredients to add! Some ideas:

SWEETNESS: Maple syrup, honey, or agave syrup, no artificial sweeteners :)
SAVORY: Sun-dried tomatoes, sausage, bacon, or an egg on top
FRUITY: Berries, bananas, peaches, or sliced apples with cinnamon
NUTTY: Nut butter or nuts (try walnuts, pecans, almonds) for crunch/flavor
CREAMY: Add milk or a non-dairy substitute (almond milk, soy milk, etc.), and for extra creaminess soak overnight in the fridge
